Links to Love
What?! Links to love?! I feel like it's been forever since I've done a post like this, and honestly, I missed it. Don't get me wrong, I love doing outfit shoots and figuring out how hair works and daydreaming about shopping, but I also really love keeping up with what's going on in the world and sharing it with everyone. I'm going to try and make this a monthly (maybe bi-monthly?) thing again.
During World War II, Sex Was A National Security Threat
I find reading about history through a feminist lens so fascinating. This is the sort of story that you don't hear about very often, and it's both sad and fascinating to see the ways that cultural mores have changed (or not) regarding women and sex.
Here's What Happens When Your Actually Eat Horrifying Vintage Recipes
I've had some odd but tasty mid-century jello recipes, but these ones do sound truly gross. Don't worry, though - there's a link with recipes to some good ones at the bottom of the page.
What Our Bangs Tell Us About...
As someone who has had bangs off and on for most of her life, I feel like the only thing my bangs say about me is that I enjoy, but am not very good at, cutting my own hair. But this article - a response to another article about how terrible bangs are - is a tongue-in-cheek examination of what bangs mean to some folks out there.
How Agriculture Controls Nutrition Guidelines
On a more serious note, I've been thinking a lot about food lately. I don't eat a lot of meat, and haven't for a few years now, and recently Brian also got on board with the meat free (or meat life, really) life. There are a lot of reasons to cut back on meat consumption; even if the health benefits are up for debate, the environmental ones are pretty clear. Unfortunately, the agriculture lobby in America is keeping the food and drug administration from recommending that Americans consider the environmental impact of eating meat. So, there's that.
Are GMOs Safe? Yes.
On the other hand, I got into a rather lengthy debate about GMOs on Instagram, and I feel compelled to repost this article. They're safe! Scientists agree pretty much across the board!
Jack Kerouac, Misogynist Creep
I tried to read On the Road and couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. Not super surprised to find out that Jack Kerouac was a gross individual.
Infographic: Is Your Halloween Costume Offensive?
So... I shouldn't wear a feathered headdress, bindi, and kimono? Good to know!
A Southern Gothic Playlist
On a more positive note, looking to get into the Halloween spirit? This southern gothic playlist should set the mood.
Speaking of southern gothic, I've been reading this series of books by an author named Alex Bledsoe that I can't recommend highly enough. I don't want to spoil anything, but check out the book The Shiver and The Hum if you get a chance.
Sobering Stats For Domestic Violence Awareness Month
And finally, please remember that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
Looking through these, I feel like there's a little bit of a negative vibe here. Maybe chalk it up to the Halloween spirit. I promise to find a more cheerful theme next time.
