De Los Muertos

I hope everyone had a lovely Halloweekend! I know it's not as big of a holiday in some other countries as it is here, but to me, any excuse to put on a costume and strut my stuff is a good one. Unfortunately, Saturday was a bit of a wash, literally - I don't think it stopped raining for more than 5 minutes until well after dark.

I didn't get very many photos of my costume, but I like this one. Channeling Wicked Witch of the West via Hot Topic circa 1999 realness.

I still ended up having an awesome time, though. I don't remember if I've mentioned this before, but Brian works part-time at a bar now, and he had to work on Halloween. I spent the evening at the bar, mostly just hanging out with his coworkers. I've been feeling a little bit lonely lately, but they were so nice! Everyone was really friendly and interesting and cool, and it made me so happy to spend time with them.
Sunday was the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos, which is kind of a big deal in my neighborhood. The Day of the Dead is about remembering friends and loved ones who have passed on. Traditionally people will build alters in their homes, which they'll decorate with flowers, food, and the sugar skulls that have become famous around the world.

This all black look seemed like a match for the mood of the day. This sheer, drop waist dress is a recent purchase, and I am in love with it. It came with a slip, but I thought it would be interesting to remix it a little bit and wear it over pants.

I find the phrase "big hair, don't care" so funny. Big hair is hard! My hair was set with foam rollers overnight, then teased and sprayed, slept on, and curled and teased again, and it's not even as big as I wanted it to be. I do not know how the other ladies do it.

Isn't this little bag perfect? It was actually a gift from a friend, who brought it back from Mexico for me. The embroidery is so pretty.

So what do you think of my retro remix? Personally, there are a few things that I would tweak here with the pants - I wish they were a little higher waisted and tighter at the hem, which would make the silhouette sleeker. Overall, though, I felt great walking around in this outfit, and I'd like to play around with some of my vintage pieces to what else might benefit from a twist like this.
