That 70s Style

I have never been a bit fan of the 70s. My impression of the decade was formed during the late 90s/early 2000s revival of 70s style, which might account for some of it, but it really was a pretty unfortunate decade in a lot of ways. Terrible fabrics, worse prints, the hair; leisure suits, bell bottoms, crochet dresses.

I'm still not a total convert, but I think the 70s trend in mainstream fashion is working some kind of magic on me, because all of a sudden, I'm into a lot of it. Not everything, of course, but I've been really surprised by how much I like a 40s silhouette, filtered through a 70s lens, or how wearable and romantic an Edwardian inspired Gunne Sax dress is looking to me right now. I don't know if I'm going to be busting out a full Studio 54 getup any time soon, but the way I'm going, I might.

This skirt is a bit of a surprise to me. I picked it up on a whim when I was in St. Louis for a wedding without even trying it on. I don't usually go for maxi skirts, which are a bit like wearing a child as a piece of clothing - they drag the ground, picking up dirt and debris along the way, they're constantly underfoot, especially if you're going up stairs, and you have to pick them up if you're trying to get across a mud puddle. I still stand by this assessment, but I really liked the print, and just look at how tall I look. I'm a bit stumpy in the leg department, but this skirt makes it look like they go on for miles. I don't know what kind of sorcery this is, but I think I like it.

The sun came out between these two photos. It was weird.

It's too wet to wear this around much right now, but I think once the sidewalks dry out a little bit I'm going to be reaching for it more often. Winter is starting to give way to spring, and I've started thinking about what I'd like my warm weather wardrobe to look like. Part of what I want to do is marry the theatricality and sense of fun that I had in my fall/winter wardrobe with the comfort and ease appropriate to summer, and I think a little bit of that louche, boho style might be a good bridge for those two sides.
