Red As Cherries, White As Snow

Red As Cherries, White As Snow

I have wanted a 30s style crochet dress for ages. Ages! But (and I feel like I say some variation of this a lot), when you can find them they're tiny, expensive, and/or fragile. Finding this dress, then, was a very pleasant surprise.

It's actually a 70s piece, but with the little puff sleeves and slightly fluted hem it really screamed 30s to me. When I saw it at Market Supply Co. - aka, the brick and mortar location of Dethrose Vintage, which is just around the corner from my house - I almost didn't even try it on. Her wares tend to be a bit out of my price range, and I didn't think there was any way a dress like this would be in my budget. I'm so glad that I did, though, because it was a real steal.

One of the things that I like about this dress is that just by putting a different slip underneath, I can completely change the look. A pink or white slip underneath would look softer than the black, a little more ethereal; I might see if I can pick up a brighter blue for the summer, just for fun.

I was going to get my hair done this weekend - I've been thinking about going lighter, because of course that's what I want to do after I dye it black because that's how my brain works. I went to a beauty school near my house to get it done, but they were going to charge significantly more than I wanted to pay. I was kind of frustrated at the moment, because I did almost exactly the same thing last year, and they charged me about half what they said it was going to be this time. I figured if I was going to pay that much, I would go somewhere a bit nicer and have it done right. Although now I'm trying to decide if I want to change after all - I do really like the dark.

I'm curious to know - what are some different ways that you might style this dress? Any accessories that you might recommend?
