Sweet '16

Welcome to 2016! I hope everyone had an utterly fabulous New Year. Brian and I had a few invites, but we decided to ring in the new year with a great group of friends at their truly beautiful house. Because they live across town from us, we stayed over, which meant that Brian ironed his striped pajamas to wear the next morning. That afternoon, we went and saw Star Wars - which was amazing, and warrants much more discussion than what I'm giving it here - and then hung out with some different friends of Brian's and discussed nerdy fan theories about the movie. All in all, a pretty spectacular start to the year, I'd say.
I didn't get any full length photos of my dress, but I love this photo of my friend and I. There was some song playing that seemed vaguely predatory, so I was scooting away and looking concerned while he was dancing up on me. I think the results are hilarious.
While I know that New Year's resolutions are kind of silly and tend to be unrealistic, I've made a couple anyway. I tried to keep them on the sensible side, just little things that I'd like to do that I think would make my life better.
1. Stay up late sometimes.
I've been doing this for a while already, and I'm really happy with how it's going. I think I was attaching too much importance to the idea of a good night's sleep, and too little to the other things in life that I was giving up in order to spend some time in bed. Although I'm still early to bed most evenings, at least a couple of nights a week I've been staying up to 11pm or so, and it's been lovely to have that little bit of extra time. It's something that I intend to continue doing into 2016 and beyond.
2. Buy less, spend more.
Ok, so this is going to be a difficult one for me, but I'm going to give it a go. I have a habit of buying a lot of clothes very cheaply, but lately I've been feeling like my wardrobe suffers from a lack of quality pieces. It's going to be a hard habit to break - there is a real satisfaction in leaving forever21 or H&M with a bag full of cute new clothes - but as I get older, I start to recognize how valuable it can be to have exactly what you want, even if it costs a little bit more.
3. Take a class (or some classes).
I love learning new skills, so taking a class is a no-brainer of a resolution for me. I'd love to take another dance class, and I'd also really like to learn some kind of practical skill. There's a great website called Dabble where you can find a lot of different kinds of classes - maybe I'll just pick one at random and give it a go.
What did you guys get up to on New Year's Eve? Did anyone else set any resolutions?
